The awards season is spinning at full throttle, and celebrity stylists are not holding back: everyone is striving to make a big statement on the red carpet events, always tailored to the genre of the event. Let’s see how the Grammy’s turned out!
As usual, at the 66th annual Grammy Awards, which honor the best achievements in the music industry, much wilder creations appear (if one feels like it) than at a Golden Globe or Oscar gala. For example, Billie Eilish, who won the award for Best Song Written for Visual Media, applied the method dressing theory and dressed up as the 1965 Poodle Parade Barbie:
The concept of method dressing was also cleverly applied by the entire cast of the movie “Barbie,” directed by Greta Gerwig. The film’s marketing actively supported the idea by having singers and actors showcase Barbie-inspired outfits at major events for over a year (sometimes even the little ones), thus keeping the theme alive.
Miley Cyrus, who took home the award for Best Solo Pop Performance, caused quite a stir with her Margiela look yesterday, she was my absolute favorite. As she joked in her acceptance speech: “I don’t think I forgot anyone but I might’ve forgotten underwear.”
The Maison Margiela dress could best be described as “shipwreck chic,” inspired by a piece from John Galliano’s fall-winter 1996 collection. As for the hair, perhaps Jane Fonda, one of Miley’s icons? Take a look at the incredibly detailed motif made of safety pins along the neckline, where we mustn’t forget to mention the brilliance of Paco Rabanne, whose innovations from the 60s and 70s inspired many, including Galliano. In this dress and hairstyle, Miley embodies a strong, 80s-inspired pop power woman ideal, reminiscent of the divine Tina Turner (perhaps in Mad Max) or her godmother, Dolly Parton, but we also see the captivating energy of Raquel Welch in her.
But don’t worry, Miley had more than one outfit for the evening, as the star graced the stage in a total of FIVE different ensembles. One of them was a vintage Bob Mackie dress from 2002, and she also wore a dazzling burgundy Gucci dress with sequins. Mackie, known for Cher’s most iconic and sexiest stage outfits, didn’t disappoint here either. As for the hairspray, we didn’t get any news about the sponsor for the evening. 😉
However, we do know who designed Doja Cat’s dress, as the rapper, who always stirs up a buzz with her appearances, tattooed the name of the designer, Dilara Findikoglu, on her forehead. Let’s hope it’s just temporary…
I was surprised by Taylor Swift’s choice of dress because it’s unusual for the surrealist Schiaparelli fashion house to collaborate with such a restrained performer as Taylor. The dress itself, in my opinion, was a pretty safe choice – reportedly referencing several details from the Reputation album, except for the clock’s position, which showed midnight, like the nominated album Midnights – but the bold slit and the emphasised hipline saved the day.
And then there was Olivia Rodrigo, who, following the trends – very rightly – also slipped into a vintage Versace dress, which was worn by supermodel Linda Evangelista on the runway 28 years ago, long before the singer was born. Take a look at Olivia in the gallery, and here comes the iconic Linda:
By the way, Laverne Cox, the transgender actress, was also in a vintage dress, she appeared in an exciting Comme des Garçons piece with exaggerated hip lines and red patent leather accents (Laverne also loves vintage pieces), check this out in the gallery.
Do you think everything is too much? Then here comes a more restrained but masculine-looking outfit worn by Lainey Wilson – the 31-year-old singer received the Best Country Album award for her album “Bell Bottom Country” in this Balmain outfit. Fun fact: the singer actually wore a bell-bottom trouser for the award ceremony. You know what this outfit needs? Height! Fortunately, Lainey has it, and the outfit looks great on her:
And let’s not forget about Dua Lipa, who was also nominated for her song “Dance the Night” from the Barbie soundtrack. The pop star brought back the deep V-neckline style, and even her hips peeked out from her Courrèges evening gown, paired with a discreet Tiffany & Co. necklace. 😉 The founder of the fashion house, André Courrèges, was truly popular in the 60s thanks to his modernist/futuristic approach, and the inspiration for these metallic details are once again owed to the wonderfully groundbreaking work of Paco Rabanne.
Who was your favorite? Everyone? Check out the gallery and leave your comment below!
And here’s to happy endings: the much talked about Taylor Swift-Celine Dion encounter! Because the whole internet turned against Taylor, as she allegedly snubbed the icon when receiving the award from her. She was probably just excited, as she made history – she became the first female artist to win Album of the Year award for the fourth time! Congratulations to Taylor, and we wish Celine a speedy recovery from her illness.
